The censuses are found as part of a dispatch from Major General Thomas Gage issued in 1769. The census of Illinois and the census of Vincennes are found as separate attachments within Dispatch Number 22. The intent of the census is not stated in the transcription found in the Alvord work, Margaret Cross Norton mentions that it was for "military purposes" in her introduction on the Illinois censuses.
