Background
(general information on the area to put it in the context of history)

The enumeration of the population of Illinois in 1752 is found in the papers of the governor of the Province of Louisiana (Vaudreuil Papers) found in the Loudoun Collection, of the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California. The original census contains the names of the heads of households, although the translation by Margaret Cross Norton, given below, omitted them. For a transcription including the residents, see "The 1752 French Census of Illinois," in the Illinois State Genealogical Society Quarterly (Winter 2000) by Robert de Berardinis.

The following map shows the locations of the settlements included in the census.

1Chatham MSS., Public Record Office. Bundle 95. This appears in the Chatham Papers and is apparently a piece of intelligence of about the year 1752 which had found its way into the hands of William Pitt. The English copy apparently leaves something to be desired.
2Ordinarily these columns would read "under twelve years" but the word for "above" is used.
3Cahokia.
4Ste. Genevieve.
5The totals for these columns should be 112, 150, 777, and 7258 respectively.
